Sarajevo Canton Planning Institute was established in 1954 under the name Urban Institute of the City of Sarajevo. That was when preparation of General Urban Plan of the City of Sarajevo started. 
On 16 April 1975 the Institute was developed into the Institute for Physical and Urban Planning and Programming – Sarajevo. 
With 75 employees at that time the Institute dealt exclusively with urban issues. 
On 1 January 1979 the Urban Institute merged with the Institute for Economic Planning which also included Information Institute, and Sarajevo City Planning Institute was founded; two components were joined together: developmental and economic, because at that time the aim was to combine and connect all spheres of life in the City. Integration of spatial and socio-economic components of the City development was thus achieved. At first (in 1979), the City Planning Institute employed over 100 people engaged in physical and socio-economic planning, while two years later, when preparation of Sarajevo City Physical Plan started, it had over 200 employees.

In 1985/86 the Information Institute separated from the City Planning Institute and developed into Sarajevo City Statistical Office, while its unit, Department for Socio-Economic Planning, remained within the City Planning Institute.

On 27 March 1998 the Institute was renamed to become Canton Planning Institute.

The Sarajevo Canton Planning Institute performs professional and other activities within the competence of the Canton, related to the following:
  • preparation and implementation of Canton development strategy,
  • acting as an agent of development plans preparation,
  • coordination with local and international institutions and experts, and participation in preparation of scientific projects and studies on long- and medium-term development of the Canton, analysis of planning documents prepared, development interdependence between municipalities and the Canton, along with determination of development interdependence between municipalities and the Canton,
  • coordination and participation in preparation and follow-up of Canton reconstruction and development projects implementation, as well as Canton promotion,
  • provision of scientific and professional bases for execution of Canton constitutional powers,
  • agent of implementation plans preparation and preparation of the respective regulations,
  • drawing up guidelines and programs of activities for preparation of implementation plans,
  • professional and technical preparations for annual program for making physical and urban documents,- participation in preparation of regulations in the field of physical planning,
  • preparation of programs for rehabilitation, reconstruction, demolition and clearing, rebuilding and development of the Canton, direct participation in preparation of planning documents and coordination with foreign and local experts and organizations,
  • professional opinion in the procedure of granting building permits required by municipalities within the Canton,
  • contractual jobs entrusted to the Institute by municipalities within the territory of the Canton,
  • jobs designated by the Cantonal Assembly and Cantonal Goivernment,
  • other professional activities specified by the law and other regulations related to Canton powers in this field.

Activities and tasks within the scope of work of the Institute are carried out in the framework of the following basic organizational units:

  • Department for Planning of Socio-Economic Development
  • Department for Legal, General and Accounting-Financel Affairs

Due to specific post-war circumstances and accumulated problems in urbanization, rehabilitation and reconstruction, it was necessary to start preparation of Amendments to the Urban Plan of the City of Sarajevo for period 1986-2015, which defined the most urgent problems of physical organization of the city.
In period since 1996 only, the Canton Planning Institute’s Department for Physical Planning has made over 70 studies and other planning documents.
Through the activities on coordination, participation in the preparation and follow-up of implementation of reconstruction and development projects of the Sarajevo Canton, over 50 regulation plans and urban designs have been made for nine municipalities.
